olivia will be 16 this year. she has always dreamed of going to paris (she watched the movie "little women" when she was about 5, and the big girls dubbed her "amy" and since she *is* an artist, well...)
olivia also has a part time job (as a barista/food prep girl at a local cafe/bagel shop) where she works very hard. we got an invitation last spring to visit my dearest friend from college and her family in germany. this fall, we thought about it a little bit more. so i asked olivia if she would want to go, and since she turns SWEET 16, i thought it would be a pretty special thing to do. she agreed to pay for her own plane ticket and we paid for the rest. our gracious hosts have a 13yo daughter that had been pen pals with olivia, and we couldn't wait to visit.
we left philadelphia at 4pm and arrived in frankfurt at 6 am their time (midnight on the east coast). we tried our best to stay awake until bed time in germany, taking a walk through their quaint town (parks, barns, cement ping pong tables), had a snack at a local bakery, took a short 2 hour nap and enjoyed their small group meeting. we dealt with jet lag pretty well.
tomorrow i'll post more pictures...
